In the last few weeks, new strains of COVID have started circulating in the US. The first case of the British variant, B.1.1.7. (not a droid), was just found in Maine this past week. The new variant is more potent at infecting people (it is still unclear if it causes worse disease as well as more disease)— and if not slowed, could be the dominant strain of COVID by March.

The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to double mask — per the newest CDC guidelines. Tests done on tightly fitting surgical masks and cloth masks worn over surgical masks showed that 96.5% of COVID spread could be prevented, along with the other now routine precautions (social distancing, good handwashing, etc).

Studies were not done on cloth mask/cloth mask combinations — but the presumptions is that this is also an effective strategy. Cloth masks, with a filtering system between two cloth layers, also is thought to be effective at preventing spread.
